Bassoon Lamps

Without a doubt, this is the coolest lamp I have ever made.  Bassoons make terrific floor lamps, but finding a suitable instrument is almost impossible (it took me over a year to find this one).

For Christmas 2006, I made a bassoon lamp for my Daughter-in-law, Margaret.  The lamp was originally a touch lamp, but of course the body of the bassoon is wood so I soldered a small wire to electrically connect some of the keys to the ground circuit of the lamp.  But, as noted several times elsewhere on this site, I've had lots of problems with the touch lamp circuits, so in March 2009 I rewired the lamp with a pull chain switch.  The base of the bassoon lamp is made from solid bloodwood, which is interesting and beautiful stuff to work with ... the color you see is the natural color of the wood ... I only put clear poly on it.  (I added a bocal before I delivered the lamp, but forgot to take a new photo of the lamp.)

Tips for making your own ... I haven't had a chance to post any tips specific to trombones yet, but you can check out the clarinet and trumpet pages for some general purpose tips.
